The retired gentleman
Some people have been known to keep their horses in the breeding shed until the day they breathe their last, KC Racing doesn't believe in such a thing. We are not a stable that prides itself on the money of horse racing, horse husbandry or even horse ownership. We pride ourselves on the sheer love of horses and what they do best, running. We'd never allow any of our studs to continue to breed for the duration of their entire lives. Once a colt retires from the track anywhere between the ages of four to five (three in some cases!) they'll take a full year off before they are introduced to anything new.
They'll never have another bridle on nor a saddle, the only thing they'll be burdened with is a halter, lead rope and a blanket during those extra cold months. Afterwards they'll be paired with mares that will match their accomplishments, disposition, etc. Our stud's breeding career can last until the stallion is roughly eighteen or nineteen with twenty being the absolute cut off date. That's typically a decade of service to producing high quality racehorses!
After they retire from this, which may vary depending on the horse's health over the years, they're free to roam the pastures and be a horse having fully retired from their career for the remainder of their lives. Our stallions are never ridden again after they leave the track nor will they be trained as track ponies, sold or subjected to any means of extra training. We don't even geld them at this point, we give them attention if they need it, make sure their needs are being met, but at this point they are retired gentleman and are allowed to live out their life in luxury without having anyone to ask anything of them. However, we do allow visitors to pay visits to our pensioned stallions to provide them with treats, take pictures, most of our horses always enjoy the attention!
